Manteca Bulletin - Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Report Vince Rembulat writes:

Students from the McParland main site and annex took part in last Friday's International Walk to School Day.
Along the way, they stopped at the various checkpoints receiving stickers for a complimentary nutritious breakfast in the school cafeteria.
Youngsters at both sites received plenty of encouragement that day from school officials along with local firefighters, polic and even East Union High cheer squad.
Shaping Health as Partners in Education (SHAPE) California served as a catalyst to the event, promoting the goal of safer streets, healthier students, stronger communities, and a cleaner environment.
SHAPE is a network of over 90 school idstricts including Manteca Unified, working together as a team with students, staff, teachers, school administrotors, family and the community in providing a consistent nutrition message.
Incidentally, students were encouraged to seek out other options rather than driving to school on this day.
Millions of students from 40 countries participated in last year's International Walk to School Month, with many more expected to take part in the event during the coming weeks.
The first-ever Walk to School Day began in 1994 when the Hertforshire County Council's Travelwise team in Great Britain.
Since then, the event has continued to grow every year.

6/23/07 McParland Kids Recycle

The following article was published in the Manteca Bulletin Newspaper on 6/23/07, under YOUR VIEWS [page A4]

McParland School doing its part to help reduce garbage

Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

I have written to you before on the matter of recycling. Not only is it possible for a school to recycle, but we at McParland School have been doing it for the past five years.
For four years the sixth grade classes were responsible for taking the Toters around to empty the classroom boxes. This year the leadership class took over and also did a recycling rally; for both sites (Main and Annex).
Last year we even got the blue tubs from the city for each classroom as well as two can, plastic, glass receptacles.
We have Toters in each office, the staff lounge, and the library. Each Tuesday morning when school is in session the Toters are lined up out on the curb for pick up. The first year we implemented the program the custodians commented on the immediate reduction by at least half of the amount of garbage we were generating.
We have also been a part of the Wal-Mart kids recycling challenge which focuses on the recycling of shopping bags for the past two years. We have won the challenge once, came in second and fourth for the other two sessions competing against schools from Manteca, Tracy, and Stockton.
Thanks for bringing attention to this obvious no-brainer -- but give us credit for already doing our part!

5/7 Sandra Shibata "Mother of McParland Retiring..."

Reporter, Vince Rembulat of the Manteca Bulletin Newspaper, wrote the following article that appeared on the newspaper's front page on Monday, May 7th. A great way to kick off Teacher Appreciation Week.

Vince Rembulat writes:

"Mother of McParland" retiring after 38 years

To some, Sandra Shibata can be considered the "Mother of McParland".

After all, she's dedicated beyond measure and extremely popular with students, parents and faculty members.

At the end of the school year, Shibata is calling it quits after 38 years of teaching.

"She will truly be missed," Brenda Scholl said.

As the assistant principal at McParland Annex, she along with Kim Texeira are trying to get word out to former students and colleagues to attend the May 24 retirement reception being held in Shibata's honor from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the McParland Annex cafeteria, 1370 London Ave.

She's been with the Manteca Unified School District since 1969 upon graduating from the University of the Pacific.

Shibata began teaching third grade at Lathrop School. After eight years, she made a change, switching over to instructing youngsters in first grade.

By the time she transferred to McParland in 1987 - the district's newest school at the time - Shibata was already teaching the Lathrop kindergarten youngsters.

She enjoyed instructing students at that level so much that she continued as a kindergarten teacher at McParland for the next 23 years.

Over the years, Shibata received her just recognition, including MUSD Teacher of the Year in 1990 and the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 1999.

She also worked as the Academic Decathlete coach for two ears and coordinator for students in the Gifted And Talented Education program for a year.

"But heading up the Social /Sunshine Committee for 21 years makes her the true 'Mother of McParland'," Scholl said.

For more information on Sandra Shibata's retirement reception, contact Scholl or Texeira at 825-4281.

4/28/07 SPRING FLING

Manteca Bulletin Reporter Vince Rembulat writes:

The McParland School "Spring Fling Dance" Thursday was a cause for celebration.

Students had spent the past few days taking the state-required Standardized Testing and Reporting Exams (STAR).

The scheduled ice cream social, dance, and movie event came at a rather timely moment, according to Community Club vice president Christy Scott.

"This was thanks to the students for doing a great job," she said. "This was a great way for kids just to have fun."

Principal Dale Borgeson has beein seeing steady progress in the Academic Performance Index (2005) with his students nearing the state target score of 800 for all public schools. (See list of schools.)

McParland's recently released adjusted mark was 781.

In the past, the McParland Community Club sought donations from the public or held fundraisers for school-wide functions.

But in this case, the club charged a small fee for ice cream and fun to help defray the cost.

Students spent the evening dancing to the beat of the music in the quad or watching the movie "Chicken Little" in the cafeteria.
